Buying a new LCD HDTV, will be connecting it to a DirecTV HD DVR receiver, but my existing DVD library is all in standard definition (as well as…gasp…all my old VCR tapes), and I don’t plan on instantly throwing all that media away in favor of Blu-Ray. I’m going to need (I assume) to buy a new DVD player that will upconvert my SD DVDs to 1080i (maybe there’s a Blu-Ray that will do that too), doubt there’s anything I can do relative to the VCR except hook it up via the appropriate connectors. Of course, I’ll use HDMI cabling for the DirecTV and new DVD player.

At any rate, I’ve heard horror stories that SD content looks like crap on an LCD HDTV (in terms of graininess) compared to the picture I’d get on my old tube TV. I know about setting the format to 4:3 for non-widescreen HD stuff, just more concerned about general SD picture quality. Do some HDTVs do a better job of presenting a high quality SD picture, and if so, which ones? I’m looking at a "budget" model (Philips, Vizio, Toshiba, LG, Sharp) in the 42-47" range, preferably 120Hz, trying to keep the price under 0. I’d consider paying a little more for a Samsung or Sony if they will display a far better SD picture than the other brands. Does anyone have any recommendations (or want to steer me away from certain brands/models)? Am I worrying needlessly?

My daughter and I decided to go half and half on a DVD player for my parents and add some movies they would love for Xmas. My mom saw an advertisement on tv for the special edition of Gone With The Wind and you could see in her eyes how much she loved it. Then she remembered seeing an old show that really brought tears to her eyes and I knew then I just had to find it. I remember it a little from many years ago when they showed it once on tv. It was something like Old Yeller but this one I can’t remember if it had a dog in it or not? What I remember most (and so did my mom) was that the young boy adopted a fawn and tried to raise it. While doing so it caused a huge mess, including eating the corn crop. The boy’s father told him he had to take it out and get rid of it.
That’s all I remember. Can anyone tell me what the name of this old show is? Also, where I might try to find it? I have looked Netflix completely over and can’t find it on there.
Thanks,
Roxy

Blu-ray and DVDS don’t play on PS3?

Ok, I’m not fussed about the DVDs as I have a DVD player but Blu-ray aren’t playing on my PS3. I can get games to work fine but just blu-ray movies wont play.
Basically when I insert the disc it goes from the menu screen to the screen where you select whether I want the Internet thingy for Blu-ray I’ve tried both yes and no and either way it just goes to a blank screen – I’ve sat there for an hour because someone said it takes a while to load and it was still the same after that.
I’m using an HDMI cable on a Samsung HD TV… I’ve set the resolution, I’ve turned off the 24hz thingy in BD/DVD settings…. I’ve played around with display settings, reset the whole ps, I believe I have done everything that most people are suggesting but I still can’t get it to work.
Any suggestions?

I love the way the HD cable channels look on it. Most regular channels have an HD channel.. so it works great.

We dont have a blu-ray player yet.. and we have soo many regular DVD’s.. I cant justify replacing all of them with blu-ray discs at a later point- just too expensive.

The regular DVDs look like crap on the new TV.. picture quality was better on the old TV. We are using the old DVD player tho.. will the picture be better with regular DVDs when we do invest in a blu-ray player (or rather, the PS3, since that is what my BF has his heart set on)?
Paul, no salesperson was involved when the TV was chosen. TV was purchased at walmart.. very few of the employees there know jack squat about electronics.

I recently picked up Transformers on HD-DVD. Before you reply, know that YES my tv is HD capable, and YES it is properly connected. I have tried this disc AND the second set of discs after I exchanged it on two separate HDMI players. Now, this is the first time I’ve bought anything on HD Format. I usually only buy Blu-Ray and play it via my PS3 instead of my DVD player. The DVD is labled HDI, but both players are labled HDMI.. would this cause the problem?

question about tv resolution (1080i, etc)?

SO i just bought a really nice 32" LCD flat panel for my bedroom, and honestly, even though it’s not that big, it looks HUGE in my room and i love watching movies on it…they look 50x bigger and it feels more like im in the cinema. My tv is an RCA 720p LCD HDTV, but when i read the specifications it says that the compatible input formats are 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i. I don’t have a blu ray player yet, i just have a standard dvd player but it can upscale my DVD’s to HD (1080p) quality via my HDMI cable. Also, I have the resolution on my DVD player set to 1080p. Since my TV is only 720p, and my dvd player is putting out 1080p, how does that work? Am i really getting HD picture? When i press the ‘info’ button on my tv when im watching a dvd it tells me its in 1080p so im really confused. I don’t see how a 720p tv can play 1080p picture. I really want to get a blu ray player soon, but I don’t know if it will make a difference. Do you think it will? Thanks!

I am replacing my receiver soon with a new receiver that will feature HDMI inputs and the newest sound technologies availble for HD and Blu Ray players. My brand choices are Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, or Pioneer. Which of these would you consider not only for sound quality but also (since these receivers have HDMI inputs they will upgrade the picture quality from a DVD player to the TV set) for picture quality

It’s a Hitachi 60vg825. A lot of the posts I’ve read on this subject say that the television must play in HD, I’m not sure if mine does, but the tv does say "HD TV ready" http://reviews.cnet.com/projection-tvs/hitachi-60vg825/4505-6484_7-31426938.html?tag=rnav
I just realized that my dvd player has the feature so I thought I’d see if I can give it a try.
